By combining acoustic consultancy, design expertise, and UKAS-accredited testing services, we help ensure successful project outcomes while minimising the risk of costly delays or remedial works.

Acoustic Surveys and Sound Insulation Testing

Understanding the acoustic performance of an existing building is often the first step towards developing an effective acoustic design strategy.

Our consultants carry out on-site sound insulation testing of existing walls and floors to establish baseline acoustic performance levels. Using this data, we can develop targeted acoustic solutions designed to achieve compliance with Building Regulations Part E and meet the specific requirements of your project.

Whether you are converting an existing building or constructing a new residential development, our acoustic assessments provide the information needed to make informed design decisions.

Acoustic Design Services

We support projects from the earliest design stages through to final pre-completion sound testing. Our acoustic design reviews consider the key principles of sound insulation, including:

  • Mass
  • Isolation
  • Absorption
  • Flanking sound transmission
  • Construction detailing

With extensive experience across residential developments ranging from individual dwellings to large apartment complexes, we understand the strengths and limitations of various construction methods and can provide practical recommendations that balance performance and cost.

Our Four-Step Acoustic Design Package

To help clients achieve compliance with Approved Document E, we offer a comprehensive four-step acoustic design package:

1. Site Survey Visits

Our acoustic consultants visit site to assess existing construction details and identify any potential issues that could affect acoustic performance. Site inspections allow us to:

  • Identify problematic construction materials or methods
  • Review workmanship and installation quality
  • Ensure acoustic products are installed in accordance with manufacturer guidelines
  • Highlight potential risks before testing takes place

2. Sample Sound Insulation Testing

Testing existing wall and floor constructions provides an accurate understanding of their acoustic performance. The results enable us to develop tailored acoustic solutions based on actual measured performance rather than assumptions.

3. Acoustic Design Review

We undertake a detailed review of all proposed party wall and floor constructions, assessing whether the design is capable of achieving the required sound insulation standards. Our recommendations focus on practical, buildable solutions that satisfy Building Regulations while maintaining cost efficiency.

4. Pre-Completion Sound Testing

Once construction is complete, we carry out pre-completion sound insulation testing to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document E. Our testing and certification services provide the evidence required for Building Control approval.

Part E Sound Insulation Testing

Pre-completion sound testing has been a mandatory requirement under Building Regulations Part E since July 2003.

All qualifying new-build residential developments and building conversions must undergo sound insulation testing, with a minimum of 10% of each party wall and party floor construction type tested. Testing is conducted between adjoining rooms separated by party walls or floors.

The purpose of sound insulation testing is to demonstrate that a development provides acceptable resistance to the passage of sound between dwellings.

Types of Sound Testing

Building Regulations Part E requires assessment of:

Airborne Sound Insulation

  • Speech and conversations
  • Television and music noise
  • General airborne sound transmission

Impact Sound Insulation

  • Footsteps
  • Dropped objects
  • Other impact-related floor noise

Together, these tests verify that residents will experience an acceptable level of acoustic privacy within their homes.

UKAS-Accredited Testing and Certification

As a UKAS-accredited sound insulation testing laboratory, we provide reliable testing, certification, and reporting services that are recognised by Building Control bodies throughout the UK.

Our consultants use the latest calibrated Norsonic sound testing equipment and operate in accordance with ISO-compliant procedures, ensuring accurate and dependable results on every project.

By combining consultancy, acoustic design, site inspections, testing, and certification under one roof, we provide a seamless service from project inception through to completion.

Why Choose Our Acoustic Consultancy Services?

  • UKAS-accredited sound testing laboratory
  • Comprehensive acoustic design and consultancy services
  • Extensive experience across residential developments of all sizes
  • Cost-effective and practical design solutions
  • ISO-compliant testing procedures
  • Modern calibrated testing equipment
  • Proactive support throughout the project lifecycle
  • Reduced risk of sound test failure through site inspections and quality reviews

Site Survey Visits: Reducing the Risk of Test Failure

Even well-designed acoustic constructions can fail sound testing if installation standards are poor.

Our site survey visits help identify issues before they become costly problems. By reviewing workmanship and ensuring acoustic materials are installed correctly, we can significantly reduce the risk of test failure and help maintain project schedules.

These inspections provide reassurance for both clients and contractors, helping to ensure the completed development performs as intended.
